Bu bienale bir konsept ve motto sağlamasına karşın, mükemmellik ile mükemmeliyetsizlik kavramları arasındaki gerilim yalnız İstanbul’u tanımlamıyor; tüm modern dönem mimarlık ve kent planlama tarihini tanımlıyor. Bir tarafta premodern epistemenin çözülüşünün getirdiği bir özgürleşme imkanı var, öte yanda o değişimin ürettiği korkular, paranoyalar. Bir tarafta her aykırıyı meşruiyet sınırı dışına atan premodern dünya, öte tarafta aykırı olana da hiç değilse potansiyel olarak yaşama şansı tanıyan modern epistemik iktidar. Ne var ki, modernitenin en azından bir damarı -ama, çok geniş ve güçlü bir damarı- bu değişimi olumlamaz. Mimarlık da dahil her toplumsal gerçekliğe bir yitirme yanılsamasıyla yaklaşır. Yitirildiğine inanılan şey, bir zamanlar varolduğu sanılan bir anlamlılık ve düzenlilik dünyası, bozulmaz toplumsal ve estetik mutabakatlar, uyum üretebilme imkanları; özetle mükemmellik içeren bir fiziksel ve toplumsal çevredir. Erken 19. yüzyılda yeniden üsluplar halinde örgütlenmiş bir mimari düzenlilik dünyasına dönmeyi amaçlayan ilk kuramcılardan bu yana, güncel mimarlığa teşhis koyanlar, büyük çoğunlukla mükemmeliyetsizlik saydıkları duruma işaret edip onu değiştirmek için eylemde bulunuyorlar. Yeniden mükemmellik üretmeye soyunuyorlar. Giderek üslup üretme saplantılarını terkettiklerinde de, yine mükemmellik aramaktan vazgeçemeyecekler. Aşınmaz doğruluk ve estetik tutarlılık rejimleri kurmak için çalışmayı sürdürecekler. Modern insan kendi modernliğinin farkına varmakta hep zorlanacak. Modernliğin olağanlaşmış bir mükemmeliyetsizlik hali olduğuna ikna olmayacak.
Bunun sonucu, asla varolmamış ve varolmayacak bir olanaksız hali, mükemmellik durumunu yeniden tesis etmek için uğraşmak oluyor. Uyumlu kentsel çevreler, gündelik yaşama sorunsuzca mekan oluşturacak konutlar, “yuva”lar, veya anlamlı, özgün ve içinde üretildiği “yer”e hep yapışık kalan bir biçimler evreni kurmak için çabalamak demek bu. Ne var ki, umutsuzca çabalamak… Nietzsche’nin “İyi ve Kötünün Ötesi”nde dediği gibi, modern insanın bir türlü iyi giyimli olamayacağını kabul edememek gibi bir zaafı vardır. O yüzden bir onu, bir bunu dener durur. Modernlik, aynı nedenle şizofreniktir. Deneyip atmanın bitimsiz sürekliliğinden başka tutarlılık içermez. Her kılık aynı rahatlıkla giyilip çıkarılabilir. O halde, tam üstümüze göre olanı aramaktan vazgeçmemiz beklenmez mi? Ama bir türlü vazgeçemeyiz.
Dünyayı hala Doğu-Batı dikotomisi içinden görenler bu mükemmelliyetsizlik halini bir kez daha sorunlaştırmış, hatta akutlaştırmışlardır. Bakışlarını Batı’dan Doğu’ya yönelttiklerinde, mükemmelliyetsizliğin, örneğin, Tokyo’ya, Cakarta’ya, Bangkok’a, Şanghay’a, İstanbul’a özgü olduğunu düşünürler. Onlara bazen bu doğrultuda iltifat bile ederler. Onları o mükemmeliyetsizlikleri nedeniyle sevdiklerine inanırlar. İnsani olanı, neredeyse doğal olanı, aşırı disipline edilmemişlik halini, canlı bir yaşamı oralarda bulduklarını sanırlar. Ama Cakarta’yı New York’tan ya da Yeni Delhi’yi Paris’ten farklı kılanın radikal bir benzeşmezlik olmadığını, aynı benzeşmezliğin, örneğin, New York’la Paris arasında da bulunduğunu göremezler. Aynı Doğu-Batı dikotomisinin içinde durup İstanbul’dan veya genelde Avrupalı olmayan toplumlardan Avrupa’ya veya Doğu’ya bakanlarsa daha bile insafsızdırlar gözlemlerinde. Batı’da olup Doğu’da bulunmayan fiziksel ve toplumsal çevre mükemmeliyetinden yoksun oluşlarına hayıflanırlar. Bu yoksunluk hissi onlara entelektüel bir misyon ve eylem programları temin eder. O sayede muhayyel bir yeniden mükemmellik ortamı yaratmak için çalışacaklardır. Kavrayamadıklarıysa, Doğu veya Batı diye etiketledikleri nereye bakarlarsa baksınlar, aynı mükemmeliyetsizlik tezahürlerini gördükleridir. Giderilmesi zor bir hata ve çarpıklıkla karşı karşıya değillerdir; modern insana dinamik varoluşsal konumlar sağlayan bir ortamda yaşamaktadırlar. Ne yazık ki, yakındıkları şey bu ortamın ta kendisidir. Oysa, orada sadece farklı modernlikler, farklı imkanlar, farklı melezlikler, özetle farklı olağan mükemmeliyetsizlikler vardır.
Sevgili Teraziler (ve diğerleri), tüm yeni yüzyılda metropoller için yeniden mükemmeliyet üretme imkanı yok.
